Two things
  1. If you are using modern certificates (everyone should be by now), then kyrtool is how you add certificates to a Domino keyring: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/dominowiki.nsf/dx/kyrtool.
  2. Use DEBUG_SSL_HANDSHAKE=2 to get more info. Based on the symptoms, it seems to me that it is the client certificate that cannot be accepted, which means the user's identity cannot be established without a password challenge.
